What to Eat and Avoid on a Rheumatoid Arthritis Diet
Arthritis is a condition that causes severe joint pain and stiffness. Its types are varied but widely divided into two categories—inflammatory and noninflammatory. Rheumatoid arthritis is the inflammatory kind. Treatment options for this condition mostly include medications that reduce inflammation. However, its symptoms can be managed better by consuming and limiting foods that activate triggers. Here is a list of foods to eat and avoid for rheumatoid arthritis.
Foods to eat
- Beans
Beans help lower inflammation by increasing protein, fiber, and phytonutrient levels in the body. Beans also help lower the C-reactive protein (CRP) compound, which is found in the blood and is mainly responsible for joint pain and swelling. Small red beans, red kidney beans, and pinto beans are the top three antioxidant-rich foods.
- Fish
Certain types of fish contain high levels of omega-3 fatty acids that are necessary for the body. According to some studies, people who eat fish regularly are less likely to suffer from inflammation. Fish such as tuna, salmon, sardines, anchovies, scallops, and herring are rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids.
- Fruits and vegetables
Green leafy vegetables and citrus fruits are rich in antioxidants and act as natural defenses to protect the body from arthritis. Vitamin K-rich vegetables such as broccoli, kale, spinach, and cabbage help in lowering inflammation levels. Oranges, grapefruit, and limes are a good source of vitamin C and can keep the joints healthy.
- Nuts and seeds
Walnuts, pine nuts, almonds, pistachios, chia seeds, and flax seeds contain monounsaturated fats, which are essential for preventing inflammation in the joints. Not only do they promote weight loss, but they also boast high levels of protein and fiber. However, it is advisable to consume just one ounce of nuts and seeds in a day.

- Fried foods
Fried meat, junk, and frozen foods should be avoided at all costs as they contain high amounts of saturated and trans fats. It is imperative to stop or limit the consumption of processed foods as they can trigger arthritis symptoms enormously. Fried foods are also known to raise cholesterol and blood pressure levels.
- Excessive sugar and refined carbohydrates
By consuming foods that are high in sugar, the levels of inflammatory cytokines in the body shoot up. Avoid sodas, packaged juices, and foods such as cakes and pastries made from white flour due to the high carbohydrates and sugar present in them. Keep an eye out for sugar substitutes such as corn syrup as well and avoid them too.
- Alcohol and tobacco
If you are a smoker, then you are more susceptible to rheumatoid arthritis and other life-threatening diseases. Excessive drinking can also cause joint pain and adversely affect your physical health. Cut back on your smoking habits and adapt a healthier lifestyle (including diet) to keep arthritis away.
- Vegetable oils
Vegetable oils contain omega-6 fatty acids, which are known to cause joint inflammation. Excessive intake of omega-6 fatty acids can even lead to obesity and swelling in the body. In order to reduce the risk of rheumatoid arthritis, you should limit the consumption of sunflower, safflower, and corn oil in your food.
